Adu: Adieu DC
ReAL Salt Lake just acquired Freddy Adu!
Last season had its bumps, but we really rocked the last half of the season. Having Adu up front with Cunningham is going to be the sweet formula for some magic next year. I hope Utah can keep those (skilled) feet firmly planted on American soil for a good long while.
This makes the winter about twice as long for me… hurry up soccer season…

Freddy is an amazing player. 17 and the face of MLS soccer. While that may mean we need more talent in the MLS, it is GREAT to see such a goo dplayer comming to REAL! I am pumped!
I REALly hope he stays! He turns 18 mid season, and will be eligible to play European soccer. :( The contract that he signed with REAL give him th eright to sign with another team, but we have an option to match his salary. Which, with a recent MLS rule change we could do (if we could afford it!). So I am torn, a little. I want him to tear it up on the field, but if he does too good, we may loose him to Manchester United (who he went and played with this year), or another Euro team with big bucks.
Whatever happens, I am excited to see him play. I am excited to see the boost to ticket sales (which, REAL reports, is already happening). Who knows, maybe the Goldman Sachs partnership move that Checketts made was to keep Freddy here when he gets a million dollar a year offer from someone in Europe! For now, I will watch him play, and maybe someday say, I saw him play in almost 20 games!
December 13th @ 8:21 amHopefully now that we don’t have Mathis’ salary draining the reserves, we might be able to persuade Freddy to stay.
Some international players are making the decision to stick around… I hope we see him in 2008+.
This whole thing actually really stinks because we have to wait four more months for the season to start up again. :)
December 13th @ 8:44 amI heard the LA Galaxy got a new player too… Ever heard of David Beckham? For a $250 million contract, the guy better be good. Apparently he’s going to “change the face of American soccer”. I think he’s going to change the faces of the 15 year old girls that will flock to watch him play. Is that really what the game is about?
January 16th @ 7:44 amWell, I hear the actual MLS contract is for a few million a year (the rest being in promotion rights and stuff).
Yeah, I would imagine the demographics for ticket holders at LA Galaxy games changes some, but it seems like Beckham wants to come the US to make a difference here.
I’m all for that.
Boosted ticket sales don’t hurt either&hellip even if its mostly teenage girls.
